This paper scrutinizes the publishing histories of associate and tenured professors of economic sciences in the Czech Republic. According to domestic regulation, only certain universities may grant associate and tenured professorships. Such universities require that professorial candidates publish original work in internationally credible academic journals. To investigate whether such publishing requirement is indeed fulfilled, the authors studied the publishing histories of those who were granted tenured or associate professorships from January 1999 to June 2005 using the Social Sciences Citation Index developed by the Institute of Scientific Information. They found that, of the professors tenured in the respective period, almost 54 percent had not published any journal article before their appointment. At the same time, some 85 percent had not published an article in a foreign academic journal. Similar results held for those who were made associate professors in that period. It appears, then, that Czech universities in fact do not regard publishing as a principal factor on the academic tenure-track in the economic sciences.academic economics, associate professors, tenured professors, Czech Republic, journal articles, publication performance

    Islamic financial system

More than 150 financial institutions are estimated to offer their services in various forms of the Islamic financial system (IFS) in more than 50 countries in the world. The rate of growth of IFS exceeds 15 % p. a. Islam rejects a designated and guaranteed profit and a certain kind of the interest. The IFS follows sharia - an Islamic set of rules. Among the most used financial instruments and techniques in IFS ranks: profit margin or additional costs, leasing, profit sharing, co-partnership, sale contracts, non-interest-loan. Central banks in Islamic world began to appear in 50's and 60's in the 20th century. The petrol trade led to boom of commercial banks in 70's. Islamic capital markets as well as the banking sector are far from making full use of their potential and face barriers

Hirsch index and rankings of czech economists

The article contributes to the growing body of literature dealing with the bibliometric evaluation of the Czech economic research. In particular, this article introduces a recently invented measure of both the scientific output and impact - the Hirsch index (h) - into the Czech academic economics. While the theoretical part of the article contains a discussion of the strenghts and weaknesses of the Hirsch approach, the empirical part presents two original top50s of the Czech economists ranked by their individual h´s. The first of our charts comes from the Web of Science´s General Search dataset, and the second one reflects the use of the Web of Science´s Cited Reference Search dataset. Both datasets cover the 1980-2006 period. It appears that the rate of correspondence among the top 25 economists in each chart and the top25 of the celebrated Turnovec´s citation-based ranking (2005) amounts to 60%. In addition, our empirical results reveal that the elite Czech economists attain h´s being 3-10 times lower than the h´s of the foreign academic "superstars".international comparison, bibliometric indicators, Hirsch index, Czech economists, rankings

Publish or perish? On the importance of publishing on the economic sciences tenure-track in the CR

Článek se zabývá problematikou publikační aktivity českých docentů a profesorů v ekonomických disciplínách. V souladu s principy vládní regulace mají oprávnění ustanovovat nové docenty a profesory pouze některé z českých univerzit. Současně zjišťují, že v impaktovaných časopisech vydávaných mimo území ČR a SR nepublikovalo k datu svého jmenování ani jediný článek přibližně 85 % „novopečených“ profesorů. Kvalitativně obdobné výsledky platí i pro skupinu docentů. Autoři jsou tedy nuceni konstatovat, že české univerzity nepovažují chybějící časopisecké publikace za nepřekonatelnou překážku pro habilitaci a/nebo jmenování profesorem v ekonomických disciplínách.This paper scrutinizes the publishing histories of associate and tenured professors of economic sciences in the Czech Republic.
